Finally stumbled onto this site after looking at some of the others that are out there. Bought a 94 GS for my daughter that was sitting for a year or so. didnt know much about these cars, but always liked their style. Just working on getting it running again and replacing all the parts necessary to get it to move. But after a long ordeal of getting it running, I am pretty sure the motor has something seriously wrong internally and looks like a rebuild is going to be in order. That led me to the search for information on the 1.8l motor and then here. hopefully there is some information out here that can help. i am torn between a rebuild or just find one that is running and replace or even find a remanufactured one somewhere. Anyone know a good rebuild or remanufacture engine place in and around St. Louis?

Welcome to 4G37Tuners.com! Hope that we can all be of some help!
Good ol' maroon Eclipses.
What seems to be the problem with the engine? Overall, an engine swap is cheaper, but not better. Since you don't the internals of the engine you'd be buying you may not know exactly how it was used, and abused for that matter.
Doing a full engine rebuild is the best bet for longevity, but it does cost a bit straight up front.

If you do an engine rebuild, you really have 3 options:

1) go with cheap parts like those sold at parts stores (advance Auto, Autozone, etc..) or ebay.

2) go with OEM parts

or

3) go with forged internals.

(1) is the cheapest option, however, they are also the worst quality, so the longevity is much lower than the other two options.

(2) is what most mechanics will use and recommend. OEM is an acronym representing Original Equipment Manufacturer. In this case, the OEM equipment is manufactured by Mitsubishi. There are two places to get these that I know of. (a) the dealer or (b) http://www.jnztuning.com (The best bet and they are a supported vendor of this site)

(3) before you jump on option (2), keep in mind that OEM equipment is VERY expensive. More often than not, you can get a aftermarket rebuilt kit complete with forged internals for much less than you can get OEM internals for. Forged internals are actually even stronger than OEM internals. These are what is used in high performance applications, so longevity is the highest in this option. IPP (http://www.importperformanceparts.net) offers a rebuild kit with forged pistons, rings, main and rod bearings, gaskets, etc... for $869 + shipping. This is a very good deal if you ask me as the OEM stuff will run you even more than that. It's very rare for a rod to be damaged in a non-interference engine, so most of the time you will be able to reuse your rods.

I hope this info helps!

Welcome! Do exactly what jon and tripp says they know what they're doing lol.
Just don't buy anything from Autozone. Especially timing belts.

Welcome to the site. Love maroon, same color as my 94.

As both CaffeinTripp and Jon covered, rebuilding is the "fool-proof" way of knowing you're not getting someone else's beat up crap, seeing as the rebuild is done correctly and goes through proper break-in.
