I've noticed very frequently that people have the incorrect tire pressure on their vehicles. Proper tire pressure means a lot not only for a DD, but more so for a car that's track only. Put it this way, F1 cars rely on proper tire inflation. A tire that's half a PSi under or over inflated is the difference between first and last, or the wall.
The number one thing that I've noticed are tires that are extremely over inflated. Do not, under any circumstances, inflate your tires to what the tire says on the side, that's the maximum pressure that it can hold, not the factory recommended amount. The factory recommended amount for our cars is 29 PSi in the front and 26 PSi in the rear.
Tire pressure not only deals with traction but tire wear as well. Tires that are over inflated will begin to wear especially hard in the middle of the tread, tires that are under inflated will wear on the shoulders of the tire. Premature wear means that you'll be purchasing tires much sooner.
Sure, over inflated tires will give you better gas mileage since there is less friction of the tire touching the road, but it also means grip can go out the window, especially when it's needed most. On the other hand, under inflated tires can give quite a bit more grip though this translates to worse gas mileage and a slower-moving vehicle given there's more tire contact with the road.
Always check your tire pressure when the tires are cold. Basically, before you leave your home or after work. Checking the tire pressure immediately after you get off of the highway will not give an accurate reading. Because of all the friction that the tire sees; road contact, brake heat, it will heat up the air that's within the tire, creating more pressure.
Rotating your tires at regular intervals helps with tire wear as well. Get yourself a tread indicator and measure how much tread your tires have left. Once the front tires have 1mm less tread than the rear, it's time for a rotation. And don't forget to adjust the tire pressure once you've rotated them!
